Clyde Jones

Clyde Jones

Clyde Jones was born on a farm in central North Carolina. He began working in a textile mill and then as a logger. When he was 41, he severely injured himself with a chainsaw while on the job and could no longer continue working. After the accident, he felt a crushing sense of uselessness on top of his ever-increasing boredom. So he began to use the skills he knew best, wood and log cutting, to create animals and critters made from logs. The collection in his front yard has grown so large that he refers to it as the Haw River Animal Crossing. The critters, which have now come to have multi-colored painted coats, and the artist can be found each year at Clyde Fest, a celebration of Clyde and his artwork in Bynum, NC. Clyde always welcomes visitors and lets them roam around the zoo and pet the animals mostly unattended with only a few of his stories along the way.
